Made in India. This short statement makes any Indian proud, especially entrepreneurs who want this tagline to be worth its weight in quality, as is usually associated with the U.S.s and Japans of the world. The founder of Soliton Technologies, Dr. Ganesh Devaraj, a recent emigrant from the U.S. came to India with a vision of a creating a company that was built-to-last, under an Indian brand name. In 2005, after seven years of being founded, Soliton a provider of virtual instrumentation solutions and a maker of machine vision cameras and systems for the global market, claimed the distinction of being the first Indian manufacturer of machine vision cameras and components. Till then, most of the vision systems in India were imported and suffered from the lack of local support and design specific to the unique market conditions that prevail here.
Dr. Devaraj wants to bridge this chasm of the lack of local support and has been ardently promoting the cause of Indian machine vision at various venues. These include CII Summits, FICCI conferences and even at the Automation Industry Association's (U.S.) Annual National Conference at Orlando Florida.
In 2007 after three years of research Soliton launched an indigenously made digital smart camera that helps spotting defects during the manufacturing process. The camera, called 'Spot-It', can identify a defective part when the product is in the assembly line and automatically control an actuator to remove the defective part from the production line. "It is an eye that helps a manufacturer to spot a defect before his customer does," states Devaraj.
The imaging industry also has its eye on Soliton, when in 2004 it was the only company from Asia selected by leading imaging industry publication Advanced Imaging Magazine, U.S., for the 'Imaging Solution of the Year' award. A total of nine institutions from around the world were selected for this honour, including Adobe, Honeywell, and Los Alamos National Labs. Soliton's Adaptive Brake Assembly Inspection system, a breakthrough development in machine vision, was selected for this honor.
Dr. Devaraj wants to give back to this industry, which gave him so much. Thus the project EinVision (Entrepreneurship-in-Vision), was launched recently which aims to help young entrepreneurs blossom by initiating them into the lucrative machine vision industry and supporting them through their initial projects.
